Description
The Arkholme Church of England Primary School and adjoining house date from 1867 and are built of snecked sandstone rubble with a slate roof. The building is single storey with an attic. The right-hand section features a projecting gabled wing with a porch to its left, the porch having a catslide roof of a slightly shallower pitch. This wing has triple stepped chamfered lancet windows with glazing bars. The porch has a chamfered doorway with a pointed arch. To the left of the main facade, beneath a gable, are three similar lancet windows. To the right of these is a window of two similar lights. Above the windows is a timber attic dormer, with a second dormer further to the right above the porch. A chimney projects forwards from the wall between the dormers, tapering to an octagonal cap. An eaves-level plaque is inscribed: 'Erected to the memory of the Rev. Robert Cort…MDCCCLXVII.’ Projecting forwards to the right of the main building is the schoolmaster’s house, a two-storey, one-bay structure with a gable. The house windows have chamfered mullions, with three lights on the ground floor and two lights above. The doorway is located in the left-hand return wall, and is sheltered by an open timber porch. A chimney rises from the ridge in line with the doorway.
