Description
Poole House is a house built in 1674, with 19th-century alterations and extensions that are in keeping with the original style. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and has a slate roof, standing two storeys tall. The windows are rebated and chamfered, featuring mullions and drip courses over each storey. On the first floor of the original part of the house, there are three two-light windows, along with one three-light window on the left. The ground floor has two two-light windows, and to the left, there is a two-light flush chamfered mullioned window, likely from the 19th century. A fire window has been removed to the left of this window, indicating some rebuilding and possible rearrangement of the fenestration.
To the right of the left-hand window, there is a door with an architrave and a lintel that is carved with rosettes, antlers, and the inscription 'ICE [John and Esther Cort] 1674', which may have been partly re-cut. Between the other two windows on the ground floor, there is a door with plain reveals. The left side features a two-bay extension that has two-light windows on the first floor similar to those of the main house and two-light flush chamfered mullioned windows on the ground floor. Between the bays, there is another door with plain reveals, and above it is a plaque inscribed 'FPP 1860.'
The house has chimneys on the gables, with the right-hand chimney featuring a projecting stack located between the main house and the extension, and another to the right of the main house door. All chimneys have diagonally-set square caps. The left-hand return wall includes a wide coach house entrance with a segmental arch. Inside, the house features a shouldered fireplace of 18th-century style, a firehood bressumer, a spice cupboard, and a staircase in the rear wing with turned balusters.
