Description

The Westfield War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1926 by Jennie Delahunt. It features a bronze statue of two soldiers on a sandstone ashlar plinth. The plinth has a rectangular shape with re-entrant corners and is elevated on a base of two steps.

The statue portrays one standing soldier, who is helmeted and has his rifle slung, supporting another soldier who is on his knees and appears to be wounded. The standing soldier is assisting him in drinking from a canteen. Both soldiers are depicted as if they are on the battlefield, equipped with 1907 pattern military gear, and surrounded by remnants of war, including a broken gun carriage.

The plinth is inscribed with a dedication that honors the sacrifices made by the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, the Lancaster Batteries of Artillery, and other Lancastrians during the Great War from 1914 to 1918. It also notes that the property was given by the children of Sir Thomas Storey, and that the cottages were built through public and individual contributions, with the village designed by Thomas Hayton Mawson.

This memorial serves as the focal point of the formal layout of the village and marks the end of the view from the entrance gateway.
