Description
The tomb of William Birley and others is a mid-19th century monument located approximately 50 meters southeast of the porch of the Church of St. Michael in Kirkham. It is constructed from sandstone and enclosed by cast-iron railings featuring an ogee pattern. The tomb is designed in the form of a Gothic tabernacle, which is square in shape and has four elaborately gabled faces. It is flanked by crocketed pinnacles and topped with a spirelet. Each face of the tomb has panels with inscriptions. This tomb was originally built for William Birley, who died in 1850, and his first wife Mary, who died in 1819. William Birley was the owner of the Kirkham Linen Mill and constructed Hillside on Preston Street.
