KIRKHAM CHURCH STREET SD 43 SW 9/24 Tomb of William Birley and others in churchyard c.50m SE of the porch of the - Church of St. Michael

GV II

Monument, mid C19. Sandstone within cast-iron ogee-patterned railings. In the form of a Gothic tabernacle, square on plan, with four elaborately gabled faces, flanked by crocketed pinnacles and surmounted by a spirelet. Panels with inscriptions in each face. Built first as the tomb of William Birley, died 1850 and his first wife Mary, died 1819. He was the owner of the Kirkham Linen Mill and built Hillside on Preston Street (q.v.).
