Description
No. 14 Preston Street is a house dated 1729. It is constructed of brick that is rendered with stucco, scored to imitate ashlar. The building features gable stacks and a 20th-century tiled roof. It has three storeys above a cellar and consists of two bays. The doorway, which is accessed by five steps, and the windows have plain reveals. The window embrasures on the ground and first floors are wide in proportion to their height and may have originally had cross windows, but all the joinery is now recent. There are bands at the first and second floor levels. Above the lower band, there is a square plaque (now painted) that displays the date 1729, the initials H (for James and Elizabeth Harrison), and above them, the coat of arms of the London Curriers Company: a gold cross on a blue background with crossed curriers' shaves in each quarter, along with a crest featuring a helmet crowned with two arms holding a currier's shave. James Harrison was a currier and was likely a member of the London Company.
