Description

This early 19th century former inn, now two houses and a shop, has been altered in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick in an English garden wall bond, with stone dressings that are now painted. It has a slate roof, also painted, with a central stack and one on the left-hand gable. The building is arranged over three storeys and has an attic. Original windows on the first and second floors have plain reveals, stone sills and lintels with a false keystone, and glazing bars. The right-hand window on both floors is tripartite, with 12 (or 9) panes in the middle and 4 (or 3) panes in each side-light. A late 19th century shop window, projecting on brackets, obscures the lintel of a similar ground floor window. The lintel of what was probably the original left-hand ground-floor window, now sits above a window on the far right, beyond a doorway, following a late 19th century widening of the window. A likely late 19th century door and window were inserted at this time. An original doorway features a gauged brick head and is situated between the left-hand window and the shop window. Above the doorway are two blocked window openings with similar heads, which likely relate to a staircase. The building was formerly known as the ‘Ship Inn'.
