Description
The tomb of Edward and Elizabeth Birley, located in the churchyard approximately 50 meters southeast of the porch of the Church of St. Michael, dates from around 1836. It is made of Carboniferous limestone and is designed in the style of a Greek sarcophagus, resting on a plinth. The tomb chest features a battered, simply panelled design and has a plain, monolithic roof-slab that is shaped with low cross-pediments and antefixae. This tomb commemorates Edward Birley, who was the younger brother of the builder of Hillside on Preston Street and died in 1811, along with his wife Elizabeth, who passed away in 1836.
