Description

A pair of town houses built between 1848 and 1849, and subsequently altered. They are constructed of brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The plan is double-depth, with each house having a single frontage, adjoining entrance halls, and rear extensions. The houses are two storeys high with attics, and each has two and two windows. Features include a plinth, sillband, frieze, and cornice. The doorcases have pilastered architraves with cornices and blocking courses, panelled doors, and plain overlights. The windows above the doorways are round-headed, and the outer bays have two-storey canted bay windows, all with altered glazing. Number 29 has a 20th-century flat-roofed dormer, and number 30 has a 19th-century gabled half-dormer with a two-light casement window. Coped gables and one chimney are present on number 29. At the rear, the back extension to number 29 has a brick-clad water tank on the first floor, designed for collecting roof water. The buildings form a group with numbers 25 and 26 and contribute to a noteworthy mid-19th century seaside development of villas and boarding houses.
