Description
The listed building comprises a barn dated 1779, located in Bretherton. The date is inscribed on a lintel at the east end. Constructed primarily of handmade brick with a stone slate roof, the barn follows a rectangular plan. On the north side, close to the west end, is a recessed wagon doorway; to the left of this are a central doorway and a rectangular window on either side, all with segmental arches. Three diamond-pattern breathers are spaced between the windows, with a further five above them. The east gable wall features three doorways with large rectangular stone lintels. The central doorway incorporates an ogee-headed moulded panel stepped up in the centre and bearing the inscription “G R A 1779.” Above the central doorway is a large circular pitching hole and a small owl hole in the apex, with diamond-pattern breathers arranged on four levels, including at ground floor level. A later addition at the west end is not part of the listed structure.
