Description

This is a row of eleven town houses, numbered 9 to 27, located on the north side of St George’s Street in Chorley. The houses were built after 1850 and now serve predominantly as offices. They are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stone dressings, and have slate roofs with chimneys positioned both in front of and behind the ridge. The houses are double pile, meaning they have a depth of two rooms, and feature rear extensions, mostly single-fronted. Each house stands two storeys high, with a stone band and moulded stone gutter cornices.

Between numbers 3 and 25, the houses share Doric pilastered doorcases, each topped with an entablature featuring a straight moulded cornice and two garlands on the frieze. Several houses have paired doorways: numbers 19 and 21, and 23 and 25. The remaining doorways have moulded jambs and a straight cornice supported by scrolled brackets. House number 17 includes a smaller lobby door adjacent to the main front door. Segmental wagon arches are present at number 3 and between numbers 9 and 11.

The windows were originally sash windows, but have mostly been altered. All retain stone sills and splayed stone heads. Each house typically has one window at ground floor, and mostly three windows on the first floor, although number 25 has two ground floor windows and three above.
