Description
This sundial, dated 1767, is located about 10 metres to the west of the Church of St. Chad in Whittle-le-Woods. It is made of stone and features a very simple tapered column with a swelling base, resting on a short cylindrical pedestal with a splayed square foot, all carved from a single piece. The sundial has an annular cap with a brass plate and a scrolled gnomon. The plate is inscribed with "J. Horrocks 1767" and includes 16 lines of bearing to various named places, such as "Constantinople", "Rome", "Lisbon", "Goa", "Mexico", and "Quebeck", which are arranged in a puzzling manner and suggest that the sundial may not be correctly oriented. The inscribed latitude is 53°40', while Whittle-le-Woods is situated at 53°35'.
