Description

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal features seven canal locks that connect to the Lancaster Canal at the south end, completed in 1816. These locks are constructed from large gritstone blocks and have wooden gates, some of which now include metal push bars and iron sluices. The locks are not arranged in a single flight but are irregularly spaced along a total length of 1 kilometre, starting from the Top Lock Bridge on Copthurst Lane at the north end and extending to the junction with the Walton Summit Branch at the south end. Each lock follows a standard design and includes wooden footbridges at the lower end. However, the entrances of the Top Lock, 4th Lock, and 7th Lock have unique features: the lower entrance of the Top Lock and the upper entrance of the 4th Lock are extended to pass under the respective Top Lock Bridge and 4th Lock Bridge, while the left wall at the lower entrance of the 7th Lock curves around the junction to create a bullnose, which is crossed by a raised stone causeway situated between two footbridges. Additionally, there are two basins located between the three lowest locks. All locks are currently in working order.
