Description
The ice house, located approximately 400 metres south-south-east of Cuerden Hall, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick and covered by an earth mound. The ice house features an egg-shaped subterranean vessel, which is about 11 feet in diameter and 14 feet high internally. Access is provided by a north-facing barrel vaulted tunnel that is approximately 12 feet long and 6 feet high, built in English garden wall bond. The structure is set into a shallow hillside, around 40 metres from the River Lostock, and is likely associated with Cuerden Hall.
