Description
The building is a stable, now used as a store, located approximately 100 metres north of Anderton Old Hall Farmhouse. It is dated 1720 on the lintel of the door and has been altered over time. The structure is built from watershot coursed squared sandstone with quoins and features a slate roof with stone gable copings that have apex finials. It has a rectangular three-bay plan and stands two storeys tall, facing south towards the farmyard, where there is a modern brick stabling range attached to the third bay.
The stable has a doorway at the left end with a large lintel, and a second, higher doorway in the second bay, which has a lintel featuring a panel lettered in relief with "1720." Above this doorway is a loft door, and there are two windows at ground level in each bay. The rear of the building includes slit breathers for the loft. The east gable has a blocked chamfered mullion window at an intermediate level, a large square window below and to the left, and another square window immediately above.
Inside, the stable has been altered, but the right-hand jamb of the upper window in the gable contains a rectangular stone with a crudely carved beast, possibly intended to represent a lion, which appears to have been moved from its original location.
