Description
The gate piers and gates at Nazareth Unitarian Church were designed by Vergil Anderton, a member of the congregation. They are located on the south side of Church Street in Padiham. The front wall is made of coursed, rock-faced sandstone topped with sandstone ashlar coping. The gate piers are taller and feature gabled coping on the sides and center, each adorned with a panel containing three sunk quatrefoils, similar to those found on the church spire. The cast iron gates are designed in an ornate Gothic style, featuring a frieze of cusped triangles at the bottom and middle, with three diagonally set quatrefoils in circles between them, and three ogee arches with cusped trefoils above. Each gate pier has a damaged, somewhat decorative cast iron lampholder.
