Description

Isles House is a house dating to approximately 1830, though it incorporates earlier fabric. The exterior is constructed of roughly coursed millstone grit rubble, random to the rear, with rendered surfaces elsewhere; it features flush quoins and dressings. The roof is covered with Welsh slate. The house is designed around a double-depth central entry plan with the staircase located to the rear. It has two and a half storeys. The front elevation is symmetrical with a three-window arrangement; it features two-light flush mullion windows to the side bays and round-headed windows above a round-headed doorway containing a keystone. A small 20th-century window has been inserted into the upper floor. Later 20th-century casement windows are also present, along with a half-glazed and panelled front door. The rear elevation has two-light windows to the side bays, with later windows inserted above a low, two-storeyed porch. Adjacent to the rear, at the northeast angle, is a secondary dwelling, now used as storage accommodation, also featuring flush mullioned windows. The interior retains contemporary fittings, including plasterwork to the ceiling of the principal room, a flagstone floor in the kitchen/dairy, panelled doors, internal shutters, a decorative cast-iron balustrade to a good open-well staircase, and one original fire surround. Evidence suggests an earlier range was present, with the present internal spine wall, constructed from watershot masonry and understood to have originally been an external wall, incorporated into the later construction.
