Description

A pair of semi-detached houses dating from the mid-19th century. They are built of coursed squared sandstone with small quoins, now ribbon pointed, and have a stone slate roof with gable copings and gable chimney stacks. The houses are arranged around a square 3x3 bay plan. They have a basement, two storeys, and an attic, and are in a Jacobean style.

The symmetrical front elevation features a central gabled double porch with coupled outer openings and moulded surrounds, including a central pier with a moulded capital. An ex situ datestone, lettered in relief "W," is positioned above the porch, along with a moulded gable coping reading "T A 1707," kneelers, and an apex finial. Side windows are present in each section of the porch, and the interior features panelled doors with segmental-headed fanlights. Above the porch is a pair of two-light flush mullion windows under a single hoodmould, and a gablet with a recessed panel and stone coping that breaks the eaves. Each house has a three-light window on each floor, all with hoodmoulds, and moulded stone gutter brackets. The gable walls have three two-light windows on each floor, and an attic window of two arched lights with hollow spandrels, all under hoodmoulds. Smaller two-light basement windows are also present. The rear elevation includes flights of steps leading to central back doors, and two plain, flush mullion, two-light windows on each principal floor, with one in the basement of each house.

Attached to the front are a front garden wall constructed of squared sandstone, panelled gate piers topped with ball finials, iron gates featuring knobbed standards, ornamental scrolls, and wavy dog-bars, and low matching railings mounted on the walls. The property forms a group with the Ram Inn and Number 399 to the left and is included for group value.
