Description
Farmhouse and integral barn. The farmhouse is probably of the later 17th century, and has been altered. The barn was built in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with quoins, and has a stone slate roof. This is a very long range comprising a two-bay farmhouse with a former baffle-entry close to the junction with the barn, a five-bay barn continuing to the south, and a projecting shippon (a small, enclosed cowshed) at the south end of the barn. The two-story farmhouse has a plain doorway in line with a ridge chimney, and its windows are either altered or inserted. The ground floor has one large window and two smaller windows, while the first floor has two windows. The gable wall and rear of the farmhouse have similarly altered or inserted windows, and there is a single-story extension to the rear. The barn has opposed sliding doors in the centre; the rear wall appears to have been rebuilt and is slightly set back from the junction with the farmhouse. Inside the farmhouse, a timber-framed partition in the service end incorporates two doorways in pegged frames that have cambered heads and chamfered surrounds, one with a studded plank door. On the first floor, there are two large kingpost roof trusses; the exposed tie-beams have 5 or 6 pegholes for the principals, carpenters' marks, and some taper burns, and large chamfered purlins. The interior has otherwise been altered, with a former inglenook (a recessed area with a fireplace) removed and a lateral partition inserted. The building was formerly known as Jack Hey Farm.
