Description

St Catherine's Vicarage is a vicarage built around 1840 to 1850, with some alterations. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring painted sandstone dressings and a hipped slate roof. The building has a double-depth, double-fronted plan, with a small wing to the right and a 20th-century garage attached to the rear left corner.

The main range is two stories high with three symmetrical windows. The center of the building projects slightly forward and is topped with a very shallow gable, which appears to have been remodeled. This section includes a square-headed doorway with a stone architrave that has a cornice supported by consoles and a shallow triangular blocking course. Above the door, there is a round-headed window with radiating glazing bars. The other windows have raised sills and wedge lintels; they were originally sashed but have been replaced with 9-pane top-hung casements. The building features a moulded gutter cornice, except for the center section, and has two chimneys on the left side wall, one of which has been cut down. The single-storey wing to the right has a similar window and a gable chimney.

The interior, inspected in 1989, retains several original features, including a good open-well staircase with stick balusters and moulded tread-ends. There is panelled partitioning below the stairs that separates the hall from the internal porch, which has double doors that are half-glazed with margin panes. Additionally, there are four panelled doors and door surrounds.

The vicarage forms a group with the Church of St Catherine and the associated boundary wall.
