Description

This is a terrace of workers’ cottages built in 1873 by Atherton Colliery. The brick building has a slate roof. It is a long row of mostly one-bay, two-storey cottages, made visually interesting by projecting gables. A prominent, three-storey half-hipped projection dominates the centre, featuring three round arches on short stone columns at ground floor level, decorative brick banding, two pointed arch windows with hoodmoulds on the first floor, and three blocked pointed arch openings with a decorative brick frieze beneath the half gable above. The terrace extends twelve bays to each side, with gabled projections at the ends and midway along. Each cottage has a door set within a segmental brick arch, and a three-light casement window on each floor, also below a similar arch. The end gabled projections feature a first-floor band, a blind arch above the first-floor window, and decorative brick verge details. Ridge chimneys have recessed brick panels. The rear of the building has simpler detailing and has seen many windows reduced in height.
