Description
The Church of St. Matthew is a church built in 1842, with later enlargements in 1869, 1906, and 1922. Designed by W. Hayley for the Church Commissioners, it is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The church has a three-sided gallery plan, a later chancel, and a west tower, all in the Gothic Revival style. The nave consists of seven bays, with a plinth, weathered and gableted buttresses, lancet windows, and a door located in the westernmost bay. The gables are coped with kneelers. There are vestries on either side of the chancel, which includes a three-light east window. The tower is four stages high, featuring angled buttresses, a west door, three stepped lancets, a clock face below the gablet, two lancet belfry openings, and a castellated parapet with corner pinnacles.
Inside, the galleries are supported by cast-iron quatrefoil columns. The church contains carved timber fittings, including pews, stalls, a pulpit, an organ, and a reredos. The ceiling is supported by shallow arched Gothic braces. Other notable features include an alabaster font, Minton floor tiles, and stained glass windows.
