Description
The Bridgewater Canal Aqueduct over the River Mersey is a Grade II listed structure built around 1776, designed by engineers J. Gilbert and J. Brindley. It features dressed stone and brick construction with a single segmental-arched brick span. The arch is made of brick and includes a segmental stone band along with two continuous bands above it. The west parapet has been rebuilt using brick, concrete, and steel, while the east side still has its original stone-coped brick parapet wall. This aqueduct is sometimes referred to as the Barfoot Aqueduct.
