Description
The Trafford Park War Memorial is located outside the north porch of St Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church. It is designed as a granite Celtic cross, featuring intricate interlace patterns carved in low relief on the front face, with a hemispherical boss at the center of the cross head. The cross is set upon a tapering plinth that stands on a square base, which is elevated on two steps.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth states: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN MEMORY OF/ THE BRAVE MEN & LADS/ OF TRAFFORD PARK/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ “WHO DIED FOR US”/ “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS,/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS/ FRIENDS.” (ST JOHN XV 13).
Names of those who served in the First World War are inscribed on the sides of the plinth and on the front face of the base. Additionally, a rectangular stone on the lower step in front of the memorial commemorates the Second World War, stating: "ROLL OF HONOUR WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945/ (28 NAMES)."
