Description
The Charles Halle Memorial in Weaste Cemetery is a memorial built around 1896. It is made of ashlar stone and features a bronze plaque. The memorial has an elaborately carved pedestal topped with a cross. The cornice of the pedestal is decorated with foliage, and the tapering base of the cross has roundels that include miniature relief carvings of the Evangelists, while the cross itself is adorned with floral decoration. On the front of the memorial, there is a plaque displaying a head and shoulders profile portrait in relief of the distinguished musician Sir Charles Halle, who lived from 1819 to 1895. He was the founder of the Halle Orchestra in 1858 and the first Principal of the Royal Manchester College of Music in 1893. The memorial also honors his wife and two sons.
