Description

No. 230 Stamford Street is a house that has been converted into offices and a church. It was built between 1810 and 1812 by Crowley and features Flemish bond brick with ashlar dressings and a graduated slate roof. The building has a central entrance and is designed with five bays and two storeys. There are later wings added, which consist of three bays on one side and two bays on the other, along with an enclosed yard at the rear.

The façade includes an ashlar plinth, a first-floor band, an eaves cornice, and a pediment above the central three bays, which are slightly advanced. The central porch features an overlight and Ionic columns that support a dentilled entablature. There are four sash windows on the ground floor and five on the first floor, all of which originally had glazing bars that have since been removed. These windows have stone sills and cambered brick arches. The roof is hipped, with chimney stacks along the ridge.

The later wings maintain some of the original building's character. A smaller wing located behind a private garden on the right may have been an orangery, featuring three arched window openings and three arched door openings, although two of the doors have been converted into windows. Access to the rear yard is through a panelled door that is flanked by pilasters and topped with shell ornament within an arched tympanum, all beneath an open pediment.

Originally named Croft House, this building was the home of J. R. Coulthart, who served as a bank manager.
