Description
The Market Hall in Ashton-under-Lyne was rebuilt in 1867 and enlarged in 1881 and 1930. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a large single-storey rectangular plan, with the main façade facing the market square. The building has a total of 19 bays, including a central tower, a projecting plinth, an impost band, and a modillion eaves cornice with a blocking course. The façade includes an arcade of semi-circular lights set within arched recesses, which have keystones below recessed brick panels. Bays 8 and 14 are slightly advanced and feature entrance doors beneath the arches. The tower rises two stages above the parapet and displays a coat of arms, a datestone from 1867, small arched lights, polychromatic brick decoration, clock faces within keyed oculi, and a balustered parapet above a cornice. The left bays and left return were added in 1881, while the extreme right bays, the right return, and the rear were added in 1930. The roof structure is made of cast and wrought iron on cast-iron columns.
