Description
The building is a former Water Board Office, now part of the Civic Offices, located in Ashton-under-Lyne Market Place. It dates from around 1840 but was completely reconstructed with a steel-framed structure in the 20th century. The exterior is made of ashlar and features five by eight bays across three storeys. It has a projecting plinth, sill bands, and an eaves cornice with a blocking course. There is a door in the second bay with a flat hood and pilasters, and additional doors in bays six and seven, as well as one on the left return, which have architraves and console brackets supporting flat hoods. A large elliptical-headed window in bay four has a rusticated surround and a dropped keystone. At the top, a carved lion is centrally positioned above the blocking course. The other architectural details are more restrained, with sash windows set in plain openings.
