Description
The gateway and flanking walls to the former Ladysmith Barracks were built between 1842 and 1843. The structure features ashlar stone for the entrance portal and roughly dressed stone for the walls. The portal has a large segmental-arched carriage entrance, which is flanked by smaller pedestrian entrances. There are cast-iron gates, and the name "Ladysmith Barracks" is inscribed in the voussoirs, likely added around 1920, beneath a plain band and pediment. A similar band and pediment are located above the pedestrian entrances, designed in a plain classical style. The flanking walls extend approximately 30 metres on either side and stand about 5 metres high.
