Description
The cattle and horse drinking trough, located at the junction of Manchester Road and Audenshaw Road, was built in 1879 on behalf of Miss M. Ashworth. It is made of polished Cornish granite and features a low, elongated rectangular design with two basins. One basin is raised above pavement level, while the other is positioned above it and supported by two piers at either end. Spur stones are placed to protect the front faces of the piers. The front of the trough bears the inscription, "THE RIGHTEOUS MAN REGARDETH THE LIFE OF HIS BEAST." This trough was erected during a time when cattle and horses were commonly used on public highways. It is situated next to a passenger tram electricity transformer, with which it shares group value.
