Description
The Former Moravian College is a house dating from around 1785, now serving as a temporary clinic. It is built of Flemish bond brick and has a slate roof. The structure features five bays and three storeys, with lower two-storey wings that project to the rear on either side. The front elevation is symmetrical, with a stone plinth and the central three bays slightly advanced. There is a central six-panel door surrounded by a stone eared architrave and pediment. Each floor has four or five four-pane sash windows, which are topped with 19th-century stone lintels and sills. Originally, the elevation included two Venetian windows that were removed in the 19th century. The eaves are supported by bold 19th-century brackets, and there are gable chimney stacks. The rear left wing, which includes No. 13, has been partly rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries and was used as the Moravian girls' boarding school starting in 1796. The house was originally intended to house single Moravian women (sisters) and was converted to the girls' boarding school in 1876. From 1906 to 1958, it served as the Moravian Theological College.
