Shelter

The shelter on Greek Street, built around 1937, is a Grade II listed structure made of Portland stone. It is a rectangular, open-fronted shelter located at the rear of the pavement, integrated into a pre-existing stone retaining wall, with raised ground levels on the sides and rear. The design reflects a Neoclassical Greek Revival style, featuring two Corinthian columns at the front, flanked by square-section end pilasters that support an entablature and a flat roof. On the northeast side wall, there is a cast-iron rainwater hopper adorned with a flower motif and a rectangular downpipe.

Inside, the side and rear walls are carved with plain rectangular panels, with three panels on the rear wall separated by two pilasters. A moulded cornice runs along the top, and a full-length wooden bench is positioned against the rear wall.

Historically, this shelter is one of a pair likely constructed by the County Borough Works Office, designed to mimic the architecture of the War Memorial Art Gallery, which was designed by James Theodore Halliday and opened in 1925. Both shelters are set into the boundary walls of the art gallery, which were previously the walls of Stockport Grammar School, in operation from 1832 to 1915.

The shelter is recognized for its distinguished architectural quality, exceptional materials and craftsmanship, well-preserved original condition, and its group value with the War Memorial Art Gallery and the other shelter on Wellington Road South.
