Description
The Armoury of the Cheshire Regiment, built in 1862 by Bowman, features an octagonal tower made of red brick topped with a pointed copper cap. The building has ashlar rusticated quoins and cornice, with narrow lights set in stone rusticated openings. The top of the tower includes a lantern with small lancet lights. The arched doorway is now blocked. The main block's road elevation has windows with two lancet lights rounded in ashlar, most of which are also blocked. There is a stone-coped plinth, and the surrounding area includes a battered wall of red brick with corner turrets and arrow slit lights. The Armoury was opened at a bazaar attended by Mr and Mrs Gladstone on April 22nd, 1862, which was noted for its distinguished guests. The Armoury forms a visual group with Nos 39 to 53 (odd) and No 30, which are of local interest.
