Description
East Lodge is one of the lodges to Bramall Hall, built in 1884 and designed by George Faulkner Armitage. The building is constructed of brick with some timber framing, all painted and panelled to give the appearance of a complete timber frame structure, and features a tiled gable-end roof. It has an irregularly cruciform plan and stands two storeys high. Each wing is adorned with bargeboarding, herringbone patterns on the gable wall, and coved jetties at the first and attic floors, with close-studding featuring more complex designs on the public-facing sides. The fenestration is varied, incorporating one and two-light casements, most of which retain their original diamond leading, with some windows breaking into the coving. There is an angle porch with a pentice roof supported by shaped brackets, leading to a half-glazed door. The services and yard are enclosed within a brick wall, painted to mimic timber framing, and red brick ridge stacks complete the design. The lodge was constructed during the restoration of the medieval timber-framed Bramall Hall and the layout of the current grounds, and it exemplifies a small-scale domestic design by this nationally significant architect.
