Description

Old Timbers is a house of timber-frame construction, dating from the 17th century, or possibly earlier, with 18th century and later brick cladding. The roof is tiled. The house has a T-shaped plan with three bays on each floor, each bay featuring a three-light leaded window. A lean-to extends to the rear, and a 20th-century garage is attached to the right. A projecting, gabled crosswing is located in bay 3, and there are three chimney stacks. The principal architectural interest lies within the house. An inglenook fireplace with a bressumer beam and spere screen is present, backing onto a closed cruck truss spanning bays 1 and 2. Within the head of the "T" (bay 3), the space is divided into three rooms by two full-height box-framed partitions containing wattle and daub panels, dating from the 17th century. The roof trusses incorporate the blades of a second cruck truss as tie-beams, each having an arched doorway cut into their underside.
