Description

West Lodge is one of the lodges associated with Bramall Hall, constructed in 1884 and designed by George Faulkner Armitage. It is a brick building with some timber framing, painted and panelled to resemble a fully timber-framed structure, and has tiled gable-end roofs. The design is T-shaped and represents a simplified version of East Lodge. It is one and a half storeys high. Features include gables with bargeboarding and finials, a gable wall with curved herringbone patterning, and coved jettying. The timber framing is characterised by close studding with quatrefoils between the main rails. The lodge has 2, 3, and 4-light casement windows with diamond leading, each topped with a small canopy supported by shaped brackets. A brick wall, painted to look like timber framing, encloses the services and yard. West Lodge was built during the restoration of the timber-framed Bramall Hall and the laying out of the present grounds. Despite its modest size, it exemplifies a small-scale domestic design by an important architect. The motifs incorporated are intended to prepare visitors for the remarkable Grade I listed Bramall Hall.
