Description
The John Millington Public House is a large building dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of English garden-wall bond brick with stone dressings and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building has a three by two bay layout, with a large lean-to on the left and rear, and it stands two storeys tall plus an attic, with a gable entrance. Notable architectural features include stone quoins, a moulded band at the first floor, and 19th-century bargeboards and finials.
The central entrance is flanked by three-light double-chamfered stone mullion windows. On the first floor, there are two two-light mullion and transom casements, and one in the attic, all with flat brick arches. The left side of the building is largely obscured by a later lean-to, but one four-light window remains on the ground floor. The right side features a three-light window in the first bay, along with a 19th-century door and a bay window in the second and third bays. The first floor has one small two-light casement and two mullion and transom windows with leaded lights and flat brick arches. A dormer window contains two three-light leaded casements. A projecting chimney stack rises in two shafts that join in an arch at the top. Inside, there are ovolo-moulded beams with stepped stops, and a bressumer beam in the rear room, which has similar moulding and is supported at one end by a diagonally braced bracket.
