Description
High Lane War Memorial is a limestone structure erected in 1920, located in a small rectangular garden. It features a cross on a hexagonal plinth with steps leading up to it. The cross is a modified version of the Blomfield Cross of Sacrifice, characterized by a tall Latin cross with a stone relief carving of a downward pointing sword. At the base of the cross shaft, there is a relief carving of the coat of arms of Cheshire, which includes three wheat sheaves.
The high octagonal plinth has a stepped base and two wide, shallow steps. The front face of the plinth bears an inscription honoring the men from the parish of High Lane who served in the Great War of 1914-1919, listing 30 names of those who lost their lives, as well as a tribute to those who served in the Second World War, with the inscription "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." The names of the 30 men are inscribed on the two main side faces, while the names from the Second World War are on the rear face of the plinth.
Behind the cross, there are three panels that rise above a low coursed stone wall with chamfered stone coping. These shouldered rectangular panels are framed in coursed stone and topped with round-headed arches that have moulded hoods. The arch heads feature low relief carvings: a shield with the date 1914 on the left, a shield with the date 1919 on the right, and the central carving reads "PRO PATRIA" (For One's Country), all surrounded by foliate designs. The panels are inscribed with 139 names.
