Description
The Council House is a house that has been converted into offices, built in the early 19th century. It is constructed of English garden wall bond brick with ashlar dressings and has a slate roof. The building features five bays across the front and four bays deep, with two storeys plus a basement. There is a wing at the rear and a later wing to the left that is not of special interest.
The exterior includes a stone plinth, a first-floor band, and a brick eaves band. The first and second bays, as well as the fourth and fifth bays, project slightly and each has two sash windows on both floors, complete with stone sills, flat brick arches, and pediments. The central bay features a similar window on the first floor and is highlighted by a Roman Doric tetrastyle portico on the ground floor. The entrance includes a six-panel door with an overlight above it.
At the rear, there is a large canted wing that has a tripartite sash window on each floor, set beneath wide cambered arches. The building is topped with two prominent chimney stacks. Inside, there is a grand stair hall that boasts an ornate cast iron baluster staircase and gallery, along with a domical skylight featuring radial bars and coloured glazing.
