Description
The Ellesmere Memorial, built in 1868, is a memorial dedicated to Harriet, the widow of the first Earl of Ellesmere. Designed by T.G. Jackson following a competition judged by Street, the memorial is constructed from stone and features a Gothic style. It consists of a tabernacle topped by a tall, elaborately detailed pinnacle. The structure rests on a battered plinth that supports cusped arches on each of its four sides, framed by crocketted gables and corner pinnacles. Inside each arch is a short column that supports the two stages above. The middle stage contains intricate niches that hold figures representing charity, munificence, prudence, and piety. The top stage features gablets supported by small columns, culminating in a cross finial. Notably, small figures of a cotton-worker, a collier, and two factory girls that were once part of the memorial have been removed.
