Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade II listed church built in 1876 by architects J.M. and H. Taylor. It is constructed from snecked stone and features a slate roof. The church has a nave and a polygonal chancel, which includes a north side chapel, a transeptal vestry, an organ chamber, and a crossing tower, all designed in the Gothic Revival style.
The nave consists of five bays without aisles, each bay containing two lancet windows, and there are buttresses on the south side only. Adjacent to the gabled porch is a baptistry located under an outshut roof. The two-bay chapel has cusp-headed lights, while the gabled transept features tall two-light windows with Geometrical tracery. The polygonal chancel has cusped lancets on each side, and there are two two-light windows on the west side.
The octagonal tower rises from a square base with broaches and includes cusped belfry openings, a broach spire with lucarnes, and a square stair turret positioned between the chancel and the organ chamber. Inside, the church boasts an impressive scissor-braced rafter roof supported by wrought-iron ties. The chancel arch is double-chamfered and rests on corbels with foliated capitals. An unusual open pulpit is located next to the two-bay side chapel arcade, which features a plaster spandrel adorned with figures and a text in relief. The church also contains a bowl font supported by colonnettes and stained glass windows. The planning, detailing, and construction of the church reflect the high quality and individuality characteristic of the Taylors.
