Description
Kempnough Hall is a house that has been divided into three separate homes. It dates from the 17th century, possibly incorporating earlier work, but has undergone alterations and rebuilding in the 19th century. The building is timber-framed, with a rendered wing on the left and a slate roof. It has an H-shaped plan with a total of five bays and two storeys.
Between the projecting crosswings, the central range features a four-panel door and a 19th-century porch, along with casement windows from various periods. The principal posts are supported by diagonal bracing, and the framing panels are roughly square. The left crosswing is entirely rendered, while the right crosswing projects significantly and likely contains the oldest parts of the structure. The first-floor jetty is obscured by a brick supporting wall on the ground floor, and the gable is also jettied but hidden by painted boarding.
A three-light ovolo-moulded timber mullion window illuminates the first floor and slightly projects above a coved sill panel that is carved with rosettes. A brick chimney stack is visible on the left return, while a large stone stack with a brick shaft is found on the right return, accompanied by a 20th-century porch next to the stone stack. There is also a 19th-century wing at the rear of the central range. Inside, original features include ovolo-moulded floor beams and elements of the roof construction. A previous building on this site was the home of the Starkie family by 1594.
