Description

32, 34, and 36 Falinge Fold is a house and byre that has been converted into two cottages. It dates from the mid-17th century, with a brick addition from around 1800. The building is constructed from coursed watershot rubble with stone dressings and features a stone slate roof along with a brick chimney stack and addition. It consists of four bays and has two storeys throughout.

The original layout is a two-unit house with a byre on the right side. There is a 20th-century outshot at the rear of the byre and a brick addition on the left with a lean-to at the back. The main doorway has a chamfered surround and a slightly pointed lintel, while two other doorways have been blocked up. The door is flanked by four-light flat-faced recessed mullioned windows with chamfered jambs for the parlour and house part. The byre features a three-light window.

On the upper floor, there are four-light chamfered flush mullioned windows, except for the byre, which has two-light windows. The left-hand bay is a later brick addition that includes decorative brickwork and sash windows. Although the byre has been largely rebuilt, it originally had a wide animal access door in the gable. Some windows still have early cast iron small pane glazing, and there is a three-light chamfered flush mullioned window in the house part, though most windows have been replaced in the 20th century.

Access to the parlour at the rear has a lintel similar to the front doorway. Most rooms retain chamfered beams with stepped stops, and there are remnants of timber-framed cross-walls. This building was formerly part of the Royd estate and may have been Falinge Hall before the current hall was built.
