Description

The Grapes Inn and adjoining barn date to 1741, although the building has undergone later alterations and additions. The main part of the public house is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a slate roof, while the barn has a roof of graduated stone slates. The original section has a simple single-depth plan with two bays and two storeys, later extended by one bay to each side in the 18th century, and with a barn added to the left in the 19th century. The original central doorway features a square-cut surround and a keystone lintel. It is flanked by two-light windows on the ground floor (previously three-light) and three-light windows on the first floor, all with double-chamfered stone mullions. Quoins are visible on the right-hand side. The added bay to the right has similar windows, some of which have been altered on the ground floor, and a wing extending to the rear. A bay to the left features six-pane sash windows on both floors. The barn has a segmental-arched cart entry, a door to the left, and round openings on the first floor. Later brick additions are present at the rear.
