Description

Alders Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1734, though it may have an earlier core. It is built from coursed and squared sandstone rubble with a stone flagged roof. The building has two storeys and features a main range with a cross wing, consisting of two principal units in the main range with entrances at the front and rear, positioned against the stack. The main front faces away from the road.

On the left side, there is a wide gable with a large window, which was probably once mullioned, set in a plain stone architrave on the ground floor, and a mullioned window above it. To the left of the entrance, there are two windows, one being a wide two-light mullioned window that may have had further mullions removed. A similar window is located to the right of the doorway. Above the entrance, there is a low three-light mullioned window and another casement window, with the original mullion possibly removed.

A date stone over the rear doorway, which faces the street, displays the initials I.A. The rear elevation has three stone mullioned windows, each with three lights, and a single-storeyed wing added to the right of the doorway. The farmhouse has two axial stacks.

To the east of the house is the present dairy, which was once used as stables but may have originally been domestic and could incorporate the oldest part of the complex. This structure is low with two storeys and features a single window range at the front, along with a wide gabled wing at the rear. There is a three-light mullioned window on the ground floor and traces of a blocked loft entry above.
