Description
The Church of St Mathew and St Aidan is a parish church built in 1933 by architects Taylor and Young. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a Welsh slate roof, showcasing a severe neo-classical style. The church has a single span design with a west doorway and a pedimented western gable. Above the gable, there is a cupola that houses a bell, supported by Tuscan shafts that carry a lantern roof. The entrance features a rusticated architrave with panelled doors, a fanlight, and an oculus above.
On the north and south sides, there are five round-arched leaded lights with stone keys and brick panelled aprons, along with oculi on the east and west walls and eastern doorways. The chancel and flanking vestries may be slightly later additions, with the chancel having a flat roof and a single round-arched window with a recessed panel above a string course on both the north and south walls. The eastern doorway is set in a projecting pedimented architrave.
