Description

Leesbrook Mill is a cotton spinning mill built in 1884 by J. Stott for the Leesbrook Spinning Company. The building is constructed from brick and features a multi-ridge slate roof. Internally, it has cast-iron columns and steel beams that support brick arches.

The mill stands four storeys high with a basement and has a long rectangular plan consisting of 21 bays, extended by four additional bays to the right. The entrance, stair, and sprinkler tower project forward towards the left of the main range, marking an internal structural division. There are single-bay returns, and a chimney is located at the rear of the left-hand return, featuring lettering in white brick.

The mill has tall segmentally-arched windows with stone sills that are continuous in the upper storey, along with decorative corbelling at the eaves. To the left of the tower is a single-storey office block with seven bays, round-arched windows, and a parapet that includes a central segmental pediment displaying the name and date. The name also appears in the parapet of the tower, which rises one storey above the roofline and has paired round-arched windows. The office block and tower exhibit Italianate detailing.

Leesbrook Mill is a well-preserved example of an 1880s mill, notable for its scale and the Italianate architectural style that was popular at the time, reflecting the larger dimensions that characterized late 19th-century mill construction.
