Description
Ashton House is a women's hostel built in 1910 by the City Architect H R Price. The building features red brick and common brick, with buff and white terracotta dressings and a slate roof. It has a triangular plan with two rounded corners, situated on a narrow island site, and is designed in the Arts and Crafts style.
The structure has a basement and four storeys, presenting an asymmetrical facade with 14 windows facing Corporation Street. The entrance section is three bays wide and pilastered, topped with a tall white terracotta parapet that is gabled over the center. To the left, there is a recessed segmental-arched porch with a mutule cornice, a square-headed doorway with a six-light overlight, and a round-headed arched window to the right. The central section features three single-light windows on each floor, while the left bay has coupled windows and the right bay has staggered windows.
To the left, there is a long range with boarded windows at the ground floor and coupled windows on the upper floors, ending in a curved corner at a very acute angle. The shorter range to the right has large round-headed windows at the ground floor and coupled windows above. All ground-floor windows are boarded, while the other windows are sashed with glazing bars in the upper leaf only.
At the south end, there is a single-storey banded apse, above which the pilastered gable wall features one window on each floor and an embattled parapet with a central gable that is lettered "ASHTON HOUSE." The other sides of the building are similar but simpler. The interior has not been inspected.
