Description
The Cooperative Press is an industrial building or warehouse located at 23 New Mount Street in Ancoats, Manchester. It was built in the late 19th century, with some additions or alterations made around 1905. The structure features brown brick with red brick dressings, as well as red brick with yellow terracotta dressings, although the roof is not visible.
The building has a rectangular plan on an island site and consists of two portions. The left range is four storeys high, with a basement and attic, and has four windows plus a canted corner on the left. This range is designed in the Edwardian Baroque style, characterized by string courses, yellow terracotta bands, pilasters, and an open-pedimented gable. The first three bays form a symmetrical composition with banded pilasters that rise from cartouches at the first floor. It features a modillioned open pediment that contains a large lunette, with run-out terracotta voussoirs and a keystone. The windows on each floor, except for the third, are one, two, and one-light sashed windows, all with moulded terracotta architraves and keystones. The third floor has keyed oculi flanking a two-light window, while the fourth bay has similar windows. The splayed corner includes a square-headed doorway with panelled double doors and an elaborate surround that features a keyed oculus in the tympanum and a corbelled semi-circular canopy. The windows on this range are similar to those on the front, except for the altered third-floor window, and there is a tall stepped parapet.
The right-hand range is less decorated, featuring a corbel table at the parapet divided into bays by short pendent pilasters. It has square-headed windows on the basement and ground floor, with segmental-headed windows above that have stepped surrounds; most of these windows are fitted with four-pane sashes. The building is included for its group value.
