Description
The Marble Arch Inn is a public house located at 73 Rochdale Road in Ancoats, Manchester. It was built in 1888, as indicated by the date on the gable facing Gould Street. The building is constructed of buff brick with polished pink granite on the ground floor and features a hipped slate roof. It occupies a corner site and is two storeys tall, with five bays along Gould Street and a two-bay return on Rochdale Road.
The ground floor showcases a moulded plinth, a frieze, and a cornice that wraps around the building. There is a corner entrance set back in a three-sided porch supported by granite columns, featuring "Caernarvon" arches above. Additional entrances are located at the center and left end of the Gould Street facade, both of which are round-headed with two-centred arched hoodmoulds. The windows on the ground floor are also "Caernarvon" arched, with those on Gould Street being coupled and featuring central colonettes.
On the first floor, the windows are similarly shaped, with the central window on the Gould Street facade positioned under a pentice canopy. The gable above this window displays a terracotta panel dated 1888 and is flanked by tall corniced chimneys. The corner features three square-headed windows, and there is an enriched eaves cornice made of red terracotta that extends around the building. The interior retains original decorative features, including extensive faience work.
