Description

The Cooperative Wholesale Society building, located to the north of the junction with Hanover Street in Manchester, is a warehouse and office block constructed in 1928 by W.A. Johnson. The building is made of sandstone ashlar with a concealed roof and features a rectangular plan in a classical style. It has five unequal storeys plus a double attic storey, with channelled rustication on the ground and first floors, and a giant pilastrade on the second to fourth floors. A modillioned cornice and a parapet are present at the first attic storey, topped by a mansard roof with dormers. The façade is symmetrical, featuring a central round-headed entrance arch and large round-headed windows at the ground floor with radiating glazing bars. The first floor has rectangular mezzanine windows, while the upper floors have three-light windows, with the third and fourth floors separated by panelled bands. All windows have small-pane glazing. The returned sides of the building are similar in design. The interior has not been inspected. This building forms a group with the Cooperative Wholesale Society building to the south.
